{"id":12068,"date":"2022-10-10T21:31:22","date_gmt":"2022-10-10T10:31:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lifeforachild.org\/?p=12068"},"modified":"2024-02-28T20:32:43","modified_gmt":"2024-02-28T09:32:43","slug":"the-t1d-index","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeforachild.org\/2022\/10\/10\/the-t1d-index\/","title":{"rendered":"The T1D Index"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><strong><span lang=\"EN-GB\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.t1dindex.org\/\">T1D\u00a0<span class=\"mark6gwp2w379\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">Index<\/span>\u00a0<\/a>is a new data simulation tool designed to provide a picture of the human and public health impact of type 1 diabetes (T1D) in every country in the world. \u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">There are wide gaps in the data about the incidence and impact of T1D. The\u00a0<span class=\"mark6gwp2w379\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">Index<\/span>\u00a0attempts to fill these gaps with educated estimates that support the case for further investment and better care.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">The\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><span class=\"mark6gwp2w379\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">I<\/span><span class=\"mark6gwp2w379\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">ndex<\/span>\u00a0presents numbers for T1D on a country-by-country basis. Some of the key estimates\u00a0include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">How many people live with type 1 diabetes.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">How many additional people would still be living today, if they had not died due to complications arising from T1D.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">The number of young people with T1D dying without a diagnosis in 2022.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">The <span class=\"mark6gwp2w379\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">Index<\/span>\u00a0also offers a series of interventions to help change the story for people living with T1D, including timely diagnosis and accessible care.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><strong>Life for a Child has been working on these issues in under-resourced communities for over 20 years.<\/strong> We have seen our interventions have deep and long-lasting impact for individuals, families, communities and nations. Here are just some examples.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">We develop diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) awareness posters in local languages to increase awareness of the signs and symptoms of T1D so that timely diagnosis can be made, and swift treatment initiated to prevent life-threatening DKA. The impact of one of these campaigns, coupled with increased provision of care, can be seen in Mali where a huge increase in the number of children and young people living with T1D was\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lifeforachild.org\/2021\/03\/24\/saving-young-lives-in-mali\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-safelink=\"true\" data-linkindex=\"0\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">recorded between 2007 and 2016<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"EN-GB\">. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">We source and develop high-quality educational materials for children, young people and their families that are written in their own language and reflective of their culture. We recently developed a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lifeforachild.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Healthy_eating_and_carbohydrate_counting_Indian_foods_1stedition.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-safelink=\"true\" data-linkindex=\"1\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">carb-counting booklet focusing specifically on Indian foods<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0to support self-management for T1D communities in India. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">We develop long standing partnerships with trusted local health clinics to provide insulin, syringes, blood-glucose monitoring equipment and diagnostics free of charge to young people in under resourced communities in\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lifeforachild.org\/about\/where-we-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-safelink=\"true\" data-linkindex=\"2\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">44 countries.<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<span lang=\"EN-GB\">Manuel\u2019s grandfather told<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0us that he <a href=\"https:\/\/lifeforachild.org\/stories\/manuel\/\">wouldn\u2019t be able to afford<\/a> the insulin and supplies his grandson needs if it wasn\u2019t for support from Life for a Child.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-12076 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/lifeforachild.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/A4-Landscape-1-1024x724.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"707\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lifeforachild.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/A4-Landscape-1-1024x724.png 1024w, https:\/\/lifeforachild.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/A4-Landscape-1-300x212.png 300w, https:\/\/lifeforachild.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/A4-Landscape-1-768x543.png 768w, https:\/\/lifeforachild.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/A4-Landscape-1-1536x1086.png 1536w, https:\/\/lifeforachild.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/A4-Landscape-1-650x460.png 650w, https:\/\/lifeforachild.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/A4-Landscape-1.png 2000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><strong><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Everything we do is grounded in the belief that diabetes care is an inherent human right &#8211; and this is what we advocate for. The T1D\u00a0<span class=\"mark6gwp2w379\" data-markjs=\"true\" data-ogac=\"\" data-ogab=\"\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-ogsb=\"\">Index<\/span>\u00a0provides us, our partners and the families we support, with valuable estimates to help make a compelling case for increased provision of care.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Our ultimate aim is to become redundant.
